Following these instructions will maximize your opportunity for uncomplicated wound healing and optimize the likelihood of an excellent cosmetic outcome. It is important that you read this information from our plastic surgery clinic carefully and completely. You will receive specific instructions on your cosmetic surgery procedure when you book your surgery.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-b\">Two weeks before surgery<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Medications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You may be required to stop certain medications before your surgery (e.g: blood thinners, anti-inflammatories). Dr. Howley will ensure that you receive the proper instructions regarding your medication prior to your surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Stop taking any herbal, natural, diet, or alternative drugs 14 days prior to your surgery (e.g. ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John\u2019s wort).<\/li>\n<li>All other medications may be taken, but please make sure your surgeon and the anesthesiologist are aware of any medications you take.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>*Please notify our office prior to your surgery if you develop a cold or infection.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><h2>Post Operative Instructions<\/h2>\n<p>Our clients are our first priority. This drain will help eliminate extra fluid after your surgery. You will be shown how to empty this drain before you leave the hospital. The drain will be removed by our nurse 7 to 10 days after your surgery. It is normal to have some drainage around your drain site. If this happens, apply a peri-pad (maxi-pad) on top of the existing dressing and secure with tape.<\/li>\n<li>Most\u00a0sutures used during an abdominoplasty are absorbable. Those surrounding your navel or drain site will need to be removed by our nurse at your first post-operative visit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What garments do I need after surgery?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will be fitted with an abdominal binder. \u00a0You are required to wear\u00a0this continuously for the first 4 weeks post-surgery.\u00a0<em>You may remove these binders for showering, but we recommend that when you do so, you limit physical activity.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What kind of medication will I be prescribed after surgery?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pain medication, antibiotics, and medication to help you sleep. We highly recommend taking over the counter stool softener to prevent irregularities in your bowel routine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is very important NOT to take your prescribed medication and any other type of pain medication at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Always check with your pharmacist to make sure taking Tylenol Extra Strength will not interfere with any of the medications you are taking.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Advil or any other type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are not recommended for the first 7 days after surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What can I do with the dressing?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You do not need to do anything with the dressing. Your dressing will be removed 7 to 10 days after surgery by our nurse. It is normal to see blood on your dressing, do not be alarmed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact our nurse.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>When can I shower?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You will not be able to shower until you have your dressings and drain removed; sponge baths are recommended until then. Baths are not recommended until your incisions are healed, at least 10 to 14 days after surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What can I do to help the healing process?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eat a healthy diet full of vitamins, minerals, and proteins.<\/li>\n<li>Drink 2-4L of water every day.<\/li>\n<li>Wear your compressive garment and follow physical restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>We strongly recommend you quit smoking before surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How can I promote optimal healing of my incision?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At your initial post-operative visit, we will provide you with scar recovery gel.
