Brachioplasty (Arm Lift)

Reshape and contour your upper arms for a more toned appearance.

Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and contour the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. This procedure is often sought out by individuals who have experienced significant weight loss, natural aging, or simply genetics that have resulted in loose, sagging skin between the underarm and elbow.

Why Consider an Arm Lift?

Loose, hanging skin on the upper arms can affect not only your appearance but also your confidence—especially when wearing sleeveless clothing. Brachioplasty offers a long-lasting solution by carefully removing loose tissue and refining the shape of the upper arms. In some cases, liposuction may be combined with this procedure to address stubborn fat deposits for optimal results.

Ideal Candidates

Good candidates for brachioplasty include individuals who:

  • Have significant loose or sagging skin on the upper arms
  • Have experienced major weight loss
  • Are at a stable weight and in good overall health
  • Are non-smokers or willing to quit before surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about results and scarring

The Procedure

Brachioplasty is performed under general anesthesia at our accredited surgical facility. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours. Dr. Howley will make an incision along the inner arm, from the underarm to just above the elbow, allowing for removal of excess skin and fat. The remaining skin is then carefully re-draped for a smoother, more toned appearance.

Recovery

Most patients can return to light activities within 1-2 weeks, with full recovery taking 4-6 weeks. You'll need to wear compression garments and avoid lifting or strenuous arm movements during the initial healing period. While scarring is an expected part of this procedure, Dr. Howley uses techniques to minimize scar visibility, and scars typically fade significantly over time.

Arm Lift FAQ

Will there be visible scarring?

Yes, brachioplasty does result in a scar along the inner arm. However, Dr. Howley places incisions strategically so scars are hidden when arms are at your sides. Scars typically fade significantly over 12-18 months.

Can liposuction alone achieve the same results?

Liposuction removes fat but cannot address loose, excess skin. If you have good skin elasticity and primarily excess fat, liposuction may be sufficient. For significant skin laxity, brachioplasty is typically needed.

When can I return to exercise?

Light walking is encouraged early in recovery. Most patients can return to lower body exercises within 2-3 weeks and resume upper body workouts after 6 weeks, with Dr. Howley's approval.
